Here at Family Handyman, we’re big fans of outdoor gear that keeps us comfortable. Last summer, I made it my personal mission to find the best soft coolers from big brands like Yeti and BruMate. When I got word that Solo Stove was launching a cooler with a built-in AC cooling system, I knew I had to cover it. Talk about the best of both worlds! What is the Solo Stove Windchill 47 cooler?

I’ve personally tested a dozen big-brand coolers, from a cooler with interior lights to those with endless add-ons. (Hello, leather seat accessory that instantly converts your Yeti cooler into a portable bench!) While I’ve seen my fair share of electric coolers, the Solo Stove model is the first with multiple ways to keep cool.

Solo Stove claims that the new Windchill 47 is the only cooler in the world that chills three ways via active air conditioning, misting and cold storage. The Windchill’s portable air conditioner system is built right into the lid, and the cooler itself turns melted ice into a fine mist that’ll cool your brow on the hottest summer days. Sign me up!

In addition to the innovative AC top lid, the Windchill 47 holds an impressive 65 cans. The included rechargeable battery promises more than three hours of active cooling power on a single charge. For extended cooling, you can also use the plug-in power adapter. So, say you’ve got folding tables set up in the garage for a shared summer meal, you can plug the Windchill cooler in for continuous air conditioning.

Thanks to its premium foam insulation, the Solo Stove cooler promises to keep drinks and food cold for days on end. (Although our team agrees we’d need to test the cooler first to ensure it actually delivers on that claim.) In addition to superior cooling technologies, the all-new cooler has built-in USB-C and USB-A ports, so you can charge your phone, portable speaker, headphones and whatever other outdoor device needs a quick recharge.

Additional features include accessory attachments like a vent hose that attaches to the AC unit and can direct airflow in any direction. There’s also a bottle opener, all-terrain wheels, a rear-facing drain, a telescoping handle and other add-on accessories like a side table and cup holders.

We can’t think of anything this cooler is missing. Maybe a built-in speaker or outdoor lighting? No worries—it can charge both!

The innovative Solo Windchill 47 cooler will launch in two colors (tan and green), and pricing starts at—brace yourself—$650. While certainly pricey, the Windchill is not out of line with other large-capacity coolers. And the built-in tech features sound incredible when you’re overheating at the beach or campsite.

The Windchill 47 is now available for pre-order and will begin shipping in early June. If all goes well, shipments should arrive by Father’s Day.
