Stop Using These Grinder Discs Immediately
Much like automotive recalls, power tool recalls are important to stay on top of. If you’re an avid DIYer or a construction professional, you’re likely using your power tools on a very regular basis. This means that you’re likely at a higher risk to be injured by a faulty tool than someone who rarely uses them. One of the latest power tool recalls affects tens of thousands of DEWALT grinder flap discs. The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (USCPSC) released a brief warning that these flap discs pose a “laceration and injury hazard” to consumers. If you own one, you should stop using it immediately. Read on to learn all about the recall and what to do if you’re impacted.
Why Is DEWALT Recalling Grinder Flap Discs?
The USCPSC brief explains that the recalled grinder flap disks pose “laceration and injury hazards” because “the ceramic cloth abrasive flaps on the disc can detach while in use on a grinder.” While tens of thousands of these grinder flap discs have been recalled, the official injury count is low at the moment. To date there have been three reports of the grinder flap discs malfunctioning. In each incident, the malfunctions caused injuries.
Which DEWALT Grinder Flap Discs Are Faulty?
This recall includes nearly 18,000 grinder flap discs. If you bought one of the following models from Grainger, Fastenal, Airgas or online on Amazon.com sometime between September of 2024 and May of 2025, yours may be part of this recall.
The faulty flap discs are the DEWALT Elite Grinder Series 4.5-inch 40G T27 High Density Flap Discs models DWA8280HRT and DWA8280RT.” The USCPSC brief adds that “only units with date codes 2024-36 to 2024-48 are part of the recall.” If you bought yours prior to September 2024 you’re almost certainly in the clear, but if you bought yours after May 2025 be sure to check the date code to ensure that yours is indeed safe to use.
How Is DEWALT Going to Fix This?
DEWALT will be issuing refunds to consumers who bought the faulty flap discs, so you should stop using yours immediately. In order to be eligible for a refund you will need to write “Recall” on the disc. Then you’ll have to upload a photograph to the firm’s website. You will also have to confirm that you have disposed of the disc. You can begin the recall process at the DEWALT website,
