37,000 BMWs Recalled Because Their Steering Wheels Have Gone Rogue

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently announced that BMW is recalling nearly 37,000 vehicles due to this dangerous glitch. If you own one of the vehicles in question, you’ll need to be extremely careful and schedule a repair as soon as one is available.

Why Is BMW Recalling So Many Vehicles?

The NHTSA brief reports that for the nearly 37,000 recalled vehicles, “while the vehicle is stationary, unexpected steering wheel movement (rotation) may occur.” This is a problem because “unintended steering wheel movement while the vehicle is stationary increases the risk of injury and on the road, a crash.”

Avoid driving your BMW as much as you can until you receive official confirmation that it is safe to drive. There’s no sense putting yourself or those around you in unnecessary danger.

Which BMW Vehicles Have Steering Wheel Issues?

According to the recall brief, nearly 37,000 BMW vehicles are prone to this glitchy steering wheel movement. If you own a 2025 or 2026 X3, you need to exercise extreme caution until you can confirm whether or not your vehicle is a part of this recall.

In the interim, keep an eye on your mailbox. BMW will be mailing out owner letters in early February 2026. You will also be able to search your vehicle identification number (VIN) on the NHTSA site beginning February 2, 2026.

How Will BMW Fix the Steering Wheel Movement?

BMW says that “the steering system software will be updated, free of charge, either over-the-air (OTA) or by a dealer.” Prioritize installing this software update as soon as it becomes available to you. Unexpected wheel movement is incredibly dangerous, and you might not be able to regain control in time to avert disaster.
