8 Security Weak Spots That Car Jackers Exploit

Side Windows

Side windows are often targeted because they are made from tempered glass, which shatters easily and relatively quietly. Smashing the rear quarter glass is especially common because, from there, burglars can drop the seats to access the trunk.

“Burglars also target dark-tinted glass because they assume it’s hiding valuables, plus helps them break in discreetly,” says Newcomer.

How to reinforce: Install security window film, which holds the glass together if shattered. It costs about $80 per window, but it will add several minutes of additional protection. “That is crucial because burglars count seconds,” says attorney Shane Lucado.

If you keep valuables in your trunk, for about $200 you can also install seat-back locks or metal trunk shields, which restrict the movement of seats and doors, says Lucado.

Windshield Edges

Chipped windshields are weaker at the edges, making them easier to break into. They also pose a safety concern, as they can interfere with the deployment of airbags.

How to reinforce: Repair any chips or broken glass as soon as possible and avoid slamming doors on colder days, as the pressure can spread cracks. “The car is a repeat target until it’s repaired, so repair glass quickly, not just for aesthetics, but for safety, security and prevention,” says Newcomer.

Manual Door Locks

Door Locks

Older cars have less secure locks, often because their mechanical tolerances are not as tight. “Devices such as Slim Jims can open cars that lack today’s security systems,” says Ryan Salata of Specialty Auto Parts USA. If you have an older model, he recommends using a steering-wheel lock, such as The Club, to dissuade thieves.

How to reinforce: Lucado recommends a door reinforcement kit, which typically runs around $150. But he warns against do-it-yourself drilling models, which can compromise door frames.

Keyless Entry Systems

On modern cars, keyless entry systems make for easy targets. Car thieves use relay amplifiers to capture your key fob signal from inside your house, allowing them to unlock the car in seconds.

“No broken windows, no alarms, just walking up and opening the door like they own it,” says Salata. “Three [of my] customers got hit over the last six months because of thieves exploiting vulnerabilities in keyless entry systems.”

How to reinforce: Store your key fob in a Faraday pouch while you’re at home. They prevent thieves from accessing the signal and will only set you back about $15. Also, some drivers turn off their keyless entry when parking for an extended period.

You can also install a hidden kill switch, tied to the fuel pump, says Salata. “It’s a cheap, sub-$30 modification that can stop a thief from actually starting your car even if they’re inside of it,” he says.

Wheel Theft

Wheels are a favorite target for thieves, who often steal them from cars parked overnight on neighborhood streets. Parking in a well-lit area, and at an angle that doesn’t conceal the wheels, can be a deterrent.

How to reinforce: Install locking lug nuts, which cost about $60 for a set. “They are far more time-consuming to unlock, and that resistance is important, since burglars are more likely to trade swiftness for diligence,” says Lucado. Also, “Installation matters when it comes to safety, so adhere to torque specifications.”

Sunroof Seals

Sunroof seals can also be a car security weak spot, says Lucado. On older models, the seals may be forced out without even breaking the glass, allowing a thief to simply reach down through the opening.

How to reinforce: There’s no great mechanical fix for this one, so instead, focus on parking in a well-lit area where people are more likely to notice someone breaking it, or in the light of sight of a security camera.

Stereos and Entertainment Systems

If you’ve installed an aftermarket stereo or other piece of infotainment, it can be especially easy for thieves to cut the wires and grab the gear. That act can also cause costly damage to the dashboard.

“I, myself, have seen a premium head unit be removed in less than three minutes, when a loose dash panel was pried out,” says Lucado.

How to reinforce: Buy a stereo with a removable faceplate, or one that is recessed and can only be removed using proprietary screws. “It does not preclude a hardened thief, but it certainly increases the effort, and effort is the adversary of opportunistic theft,” says Lucado.

Parking Choices

Parking wisely is one of the best deterrents for all car security weak spots. Avoid leaving your vehicle in dark or isolated areas, as this gives thieves space and time to work. Parking in the same spot, at the same time every day, can also make you vulnerable to break-ins. “Burglar’s like predictability, so switch up where you park,” says Newcomer.

Finally, keep all items out of site. “This may be an obvious one, but even a worthless bag will get a window smashed,” says Newcomer. “Hide items under seats or in the trunk before arriving, not after you park.”

FAQ

What are the most secure cars (and why)?

Features that make cars less likely to be broken into are complete digital immobilizers, active surveillance, strong alarms, integrated cameras and laminated side glass. “Boring-looking cars are more secure than luxury models with visible tech,” says Newcomer. “And empty cars are more secure.”

Does car insurance cover stolen items?

Not usually, but sometimes you can add personal property coverage to your auto insurance policy with your provider. More often, homeowners or renters’ insurance will cover items stolen from a car.
