What That Little Person Symbol on Your Car Dash Actually Means
Our car’s dashboards are full of numerous symbols and warning lights. One you may have noticed but didn’t know the purpose of is the person icon, which can be found on many modern vehicle dashboards. Learn what the person symbol means, where you’re most likely to encounter it, how the system works, and what to do when the alert appears.
What Does the Person Symbol Mean and What Does It Look Like?
That person symbol relates to pedestrian detection, a driver-assistance feature that scans for people entering your vehicle’s path.
When the symbol is activated, it means the detection system has identified someone in the path and that a collision could occur. When the system has detected a pedestrian, it will typically display a steady symbol, flashing icon, warning message, or audible alert signals. Some vehicles might display a similar symbol when a rear camera detects someone behind a reversing vehicle.
This technology goes by different terminologies, including pedestrian detection, pre-collision assist, and pedestrian automatic emergency braking. A slash through the icon or an “OFF” message typically means the feature isn’t turned on or available. Your vehicle’s owner’s manual can help you locate that feature if it’s enabled or available on your model.
The symbol’s look varies depending on the vehicle you have. For instance, it could appear like a person standing or walking, sometimes inside a triangle or in front of a vehicle, or in the instrument cluster, head-up display, rearview camera screen, or center display.
How Pedestrian Detection Works

Pedestrian detection uses forward-facing cameras, radar, or sometimes both, to monitor the road and identify if a pedestrian is in the vehicle’s path and whether a collision is possible. If it deems that the case, it displays the person symbol and/or plays a sound to alert the driver so they have enough time to slow down or stop before an accident. Some vehicles may even apply an emergency braking system if the driver doesn’t respond to the impending collision.
The alerting system may also have the detection for cyclists, depending on your vehicle.
If you see this symbol, you should check the road for any potential hazards, reduce speed, scan your surroundings, and be prepared to stop. If the warning appears while reversing, check behind the vehicle for pedestrians or other hazards. Sometimes the system can be triggered by a false alarm like shadows, roadside objects, or conditions that can trick the detectors.
It should not be relied on as a substitute for attentive driving, but rather an additional tool to help you and your surroundings stay as safe as possible when you’re behind the wheel.
When Pedestrian Detection May Not Work Properly
Pedestrian detection isn’t perfect, and certain things can impair its ability to properly scan for hazards. For instance, dirt, ice, snow, mud, dust, or condensation can block the camera or radar sensor. Also, weather conditions like rain, glare and darkness can make detection more difficult.
While many of these things are outside of your control, drivers can take responsibility in the detection system working properly.
Avoid any obstructions, like stickers, magnets, or other accessories, near the vehicle’s cameras and sensors. Also, include sensor inspection or calibration as part of your regular vehicle maintenance. Doing this can keep you, and pedestrians, safer on the road.
