2025’s Safest and Most Dangerous Cities to Drive In

For the past 20 years, Allstate has analyzed auto insurance claim data in America’s 200 most populous cities to see which are the safest and which are the riskiest cities to drive in. The 2025 results just came in and the top ten safest and riskiest may surprise you. Since the company is pulling only from insurance claims, the data doesn’t take into account things like the number of speeding tickets issued in each city, nor does it look at every single city in the country. Still, it’s a very good glimpse into which cities are relatively safe for motorists and which ones you may need to tap into your defensive driving skills in.

Safest Cities to Drive In

According to the Allstate 2025 report, the top ten safest cities to drive in are:

  • Brownsville, TX
  • Boise, ID
  • Fort Collins, CO
  • Cary, NC
  • Laredo, TX
  • Olathe, KS
  • Scottsdale, AZ
  • Port St. Lucie, FL
  • Madison, WI
  • Eugene, OR

These cities had the fewest reported auto insurance claims. There may still have been accidents that went unreported if neither driver filed a claim, but in general you’re likely to be relatively safe driving in these places. That doesn’t mean that you should sit back and throw all caution to the wind, however. As a driver it is your responsibility to be vigilant behind the wheel at all times.

Riskiest Cities to Drive In

On the flip side, of the 200 most populous U.S. cities, the ten riskiest cities to drive in are:

  • Boston, MA
  • Washington, DC
  • Baltimore, MD
  • Worcester, MA
  • Springfield, MA
  • Glendale, CA
  • Los Angeles, CA
  • Oakland, CA
  • Providence, RI
  • Philadelphia, PA

These results may be less of a surprise than the safest cities list. Many of the cities on this list are already famous for their congested traffic.

It’s important to remember the limitations of this data. The number of accidents is pulled from auto insurance claim information, not from accident reports or traffic camera data. So accidents that weren’t reported to auto insurers aren’t included in the numbers. Also, this list isn’t looking at accident’s per capita. These cities are all among the top 200 most populous cities in the country, and when you add more drivers to the mix your likelihood of an accident increases because there’s more opportunity for you to interact with other drivers. But if these numbers were scaled to account for differences in population, the list might look a little different. Regardless, it’s an excellent starting point when planning any trips or looking at the estimated prices of auto insurance in a given area.
